Stereotype
Stereotype investigates the reciprocal relationship between televised imagery and contemporary modes of visual self‑presentation. Drawing from an extensive collection of black‑and‑white screenshots sourced from sitcoms and television series, the project examines how standardized gestures, expressions, and spatial dynamics evolve into shared conventions of behavior and visual appearance.
Through processes of selection, categorization, and reduction, Stereotype transforms familiar media fragments into an analytical framework for observing the aesthetics of everyday performance. The absence of color serves to neutralize the emotional tone of the original scenes, foregrounding posture, gaze, and gesture as cultural signifiers rather than narrative elements.
The project thus questions the permeability between fiction and lived experience: to what degree are our bodily attitudes and visual identities modeled after these reproducible, iconic images? Stereotype invites a critical reflection on the extent to which popular media shapes our sense of authenticity, individuality, and collective visual consciousness
